WCOC 'O'

Thusday 22/06/06

WCOC summer evening league orienteering
Long course - 6.5km.
10th place - 1hr 10mins 30secs

Thought I needed a bit of map reading practice before next weeks Saunders.
Made a great start ending up on the wrong side of the River Greta, doh!
Miraculously posted two fastest leg times.
One was a long run along a track where I luckily turned off at the right point straight onto the check.
The other was straight up a hill from the last check to the finish.
Hare and tortoise in action.
Thanks to Andy Bradley who kept me right a few times and filled me in on what all the symbols on the map meant.

Langstrath

Langstrath Fell Race - miles / feet
38th place - 52mins 54secs

Midsummer's day, my arse.
It heaved it down for this usually pleasant evening race.
Came a cropper on the wet rocks at the beginning of the climb after a very fierce start.
Tried to carry on but it didn't feel right with any weight on my left leg. Bugger.
Steve said I made quite a crack when I hit the deck and there were concerned faces.
I turned round (not that gutted really!) and bimbled back to the gate.
However, after a few minutes downhill jog it felt much better so I decided to trot round after all.
Wanted a run and was already pish wet through.
Enjoyed working my way back through the field, getting confused looks and was cheered on by the irrepressible Phil Davies.
So there you go Michael Owen, you should have carried on!
Results where I appear to have aged !!!

Tebay

Wednesday 14/06/06

Tebay fell race - miles / feet
23rd place - 1hr 31mins 38secs

The usual Tebay welcome of pie and peas in the social club with a free pint.
As is becoming the norm at this race, nobody knew which way to go at the start.
Most plumped for the track in the end, but the opening pace was ridiculously slow as everyone watched each other, bike racing style.
Pity about the midges, though it will break me in for LAMM I suppose.

Blencathra

Wednesday 07/06/06

Blencathra fell race - 8miles / 2700ft
9th place - 1hr 14mins 57secs

Incorporating the inaugural (and probably the only) Cumbria Police fell running championships.
I was fleetingly in front of Andy at the end of the first climb, but ended up tracking him the rest of the way.
Needed to be in front of him before the final descent but it wasn't to be.

Lakeland Classics series number one - superlong counter

More like Death Valley fell race today. Well OK it wasn't Wasdale 05 hot, but I've got very scorched arms where I missed with the factor 20. Some silliness at circuit training on Thursday left me with hamstrings as tight as guitar strings. I just couldn't get going on the descents and fast runny bits (of which there a lot on this race). But I had 3-30 in my head before the race so I guess it went OK. Would have been nice to stay with Paul C in the battle to be third counter for the team though. Felt a bit drained for my 8 hours foot patrol on Saturday night, my glowing face kept the piss heads amused!
