Dale Head

Sunday 17/09/06

Dale Head fell race - 4.5 miles / 2300 feet
29th place - 58 mins 41 secs

After much bravado at the Victoria after Peris, Michael and I were duty bound to get ourselves to Dale Head.
I was 3 minutes and 19 places slower than last year.
The CFR lags were all trying to psyche me out 'you must be tired after Peris' etc.
Certainly I was in better shape at this race last year after doing 3 Shires the day before.
Wouldn't have gone out for a run otherwise, so it was worth it, despite having to dash to work and missing the show.

Set off with good intentions (read 'too quickly') - see pics ahead of Christine Howard and Colin Donnelly !!!
Cramp set in early on the way to Pen Y pass so it was survival from there onwards
Took me 5 mins longer than Wasdale (21 miles / 9000 feet), which shows how much I struggled
Fortunately Scoffer got round despite feeling ill and Morgan's knee held out, so BFR won the champs, which is lucky as I ran like a nonce
Thanks to Mike the Marrow for convincing me to go

Managed to wangle the time off at the last minute to do my 5th Ben race in a row.
No real fireworks, climbed in about 1-15, which makes my descent a respectable (for me) 39 minutes.
Still felt like I was bimbling downhill. Andy B got me for three minutes from the summit to the metal bridges, though I took a minute back off him on the road.
One day I will learn to attack the descent, especially the grassy bank. Surely a couple of falls won't hurt that bad ?!?
I climbed it in 1-12 a few years ago. So with a 1-10 climb and 35 minute descent, I might get near to Jon Wright for the Police prize. Well I've 16 left to do, so there's time yet.
Apres race entertainment in the Crofters with the Clayton posse and Sharon and Rob (who ended up dancing round shirtless!)

Pre race breakfast with Steve and Peggy in Glencoe / Kieran Carr with the inaugural over 60s trophy (which he instigated!)

Oops.
Having reccied it twice and finishing 8th last year I was obviously a bit over confident.
The Howgill triangle between CP3 and CP4 claimed 5 victims.
Even in a field of 330 odd it was very easily done.
I got the feeling I was being followed too - that'll teach 'em !
Made the acquaintance of the very jolly Sally Newman who took it all in good spirits.
